What are composite (white) fillings?

A white filling is simply a less noticeable alternative to a silver (amalgam) filling.

Made from durable composite resin, white fillings can be colour-matched to your teeth. Just like amalgam fillings, they are designed to repair a tooth cavity but because the resin is tooth-coloured, they can also be used to repair cracked or chipped teeth – particularly those situated in the smile line.

In other words, white tooth fillings here in Chesham provide a multi-functional repair that is aesthetically driven.

Tooth filling alternatives – Dental inlays & onlays

Sometimes a patient comes to us with a larger cavity or repair.

This might not warrant a dental crown but is too large for a white or silver filling. In these cases, we provide patients with dental inlays and onlays.

As the name suggests, dental inlays are designed to fit snugly ‘into’ the hollow of the tooth while dental onlays are placed ‘onto’ the tooth cusp. They can be made from either composite resin (the same material as white tooth fillings) or dental porcelain. Either way inlays and onlays can repair a tooth without it losing any of its natural beauty.

Like white fillings, inlays and onlays offer protection and strength to a damaged tooth while being less invasive than other tooth restorations.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a dental filling?

It depends! Factors like cavity structure, the size of the hole and the position of the problem tooth can all impact on the time taken to give you a seamless smile. However, as a general rule of thumb, allow yourself 1 hour and you won’t go far wrong.

Does getting a tooth filling hurt?

In a word, no. Thanks to localised anaesthesia, once the dentist has numbed the area, you shouldn’t feel a thing. For those patients who are particularly nervous or dental phobic, we also provide dental sedation upon request.

Can I eat after a filling or dental inlay/onlay?

Unlike silver amalgam fillings, patients being fitted with white fillings or composite inlays can eat right away after treatment. However, we would recommend that you wait for any anesthetic to fully wear off before eating. Otherwise, you may run the risk of biting your cheek or tongue.

How long do white fillings last?

The longevity factor for composite fillings or composite inlays is improving all the time and now they may be on a par with silver amalgam fillings depending upon where in the mouth they’re situated. As a result, and provided composite filings are looked after correctly, they can last for 7-10 years.
